MEDICINE LODGE, Kansas – Two people were injured in an apartment fire in Medicine Lodge early Thursday morning.

Fire crews were at the apartment complex at 600 E. Curry around 2 a.m. They say it was engulfed in flames.

Before fire crews arrived, neighbors had already used a ladder to rescue people trapped on the top floor of the burning building.

One of the victims was found hiding under his bed, suffering from smoke inhalation and burns.  He was flown to a Wichita hospital and is in critical condition.

Another resident suffered smoke inhalation and was treated and released from the hospital.

Of the eight apartments in the burned building, four were destroyed.  The other four are damaged.

The American Red Cross is coordinating shelter for the displaced residents.

The fire is still under investigation, but officials are leaning toward careless smoking as the cause.
