FOXKANSAS.com -- Sedgwick County has published the list of taxpayers who haven't settled their property tax bill, officially starting a process that could end in foreclosure for those who don't act to resolve the outstanding debt.
Country Treasurer Ikinda Kizzire said for 2010 the county is owed over $21.6 million in unpaid tax assessments, a development authorities have blamed on the struggling national economy. The 2010 property tax rolls for Sedgwick stand at $574 million, authorities said.
By publishing the list of property owners who are in arrears for 2010, the county has begun the foreclosure process. The list is printed in the local newspaper for three consecutive weeks as part of the notification process. The county initiates foreclosure for landowners who haven't settled their debts by Sept. 6. Under local law, the county can sell the property after 2-and-a-half years of unpaid assessments.
