WICHITA, Kansas -- Wichita Council Member Michael O'Donnell announced today, Nov. 21, he will submit his resignation as District IV Council Member during the Dec. 4 city council meeting.

His resignation will take effect on Dec. 31.

"I want to thank the residents of District IV for believing in me and allowing me to serve as their Council Member and to serve as a State Senator for many of them," said O'Donnell, who won a State Senate seat in early November. "While it would be possible for me to serve in both positions, I feel our district is best served with a full-time council member and a full-time state senator.

O'Donnell's resignation will create a vacancy in District IV. The vacancy would only be filled by popular vote at the next general election on April 2, 2013 unless the council takes action otherwise.

At the Dec. 4 city council meeting, council members will decide whether to allow the District IV seat to remain vacant until filled by an election or to temporarily fill the seat.

Any temporary member would by selected by the council from a group of candidates qualified after filing valid, timely petitions with the Wichita City Clerk.
