WICHITA, Kansas -- Wichita park officials have scheduled grass burning at area parks.
The burning will take place the remainder of February and March at Swanson, Meadows, Dr. Glen Day, Chisholm Creek and Pawnee Prairie Parks.
Officials say the fires help preserve native grass and plants.
"Removing accumulated fuels from the park will lessen the possibility of wildfires damaging property," said Doug Kupper, the Park and Recreation Director. "Every precaution will be taken to keep smoke and ash from leaving the park."
Weather conditions will determine the exact date.
The burns will be implemented under controlled guidelines from the Wichita Fire Department and Kansas Department of Health and Environment.
