WICHITA, Kansas -- This is only the beginning of efforts to clean up and remove the snow.

Crews from the Public Works & Utilities Department for the City of Wichita have been working to clear roadways and plow away the snow since Wednesday.

Crews have created a massive snow pile at a lot on 1st and McLean near the Delano District.

Removing the snow from Wichita streets is a step by step process.

Crews were out early Friday morning while most people in the city were still sleeping.

Bulldozers were used to scoop up the snow then dumped into a truck then transported to 1st and McLean.

Many years ago the city went ahead and dumped the snow into the river, but they can't do that this year.

"We specifically don't dump into the river like we did many years ago because of the salt and sand that's mixed in with the snow," said Joe Pajor, Public Works & Utilities, City of Wichita. "By putting on this separate site, as it melts the water will tend to be carried off, but the site itself will filter the salt and the sand and that will be left behind."

City of Wichita has already reordered supply for more salt and sand.

More snow could be in the works for Monday so city crews say they want to be prepared, better safe than sorry.
