WICHITA, Kansas -- As Fire Prevention Week winds down, Wichita firefighters are just getting started.
They're visiting all Wichita apartments to promote fire prevention.
Apartment buildings can hold extra risk when it comes to fire.
"Fires are very dangerous, they are very scary and you lose a lot of stuff in it," says Steven Showalter with the Wichita Fire Department.
He says the department doesn't need any more job security.
"Apartment complexes like this, just because of their nature and close proximity to each other, they experience a lot of fires."
So firefighters are paying a visit to all apartments in Wichita during the next few weeks, sharing awareness of fire prevention.
"Three major causes of fires in apartment complexes is unattended cooking, smoking and cooking on balconies."
Firefighters say when living in apartment buildings it's important that not only you be safe, but also those living above, below and next to you.
"I hadn't put a lot of thought into it before but living in an apartment like this you've got to make sure you stay protected where you can," says resident Matt Ochsner.
Showalter explains, "Simply because of the nature of construction fires, are going to be fast moving, they're going to be incredibly hot, you're going to have more people involved with the size of buildings here."
For those not home, firefighters are leaving an informative flier about the three most common causes of apartment fires - unattended cooking, smoking and grilling.
They also offered a friendly suggestion - get renter's insurance.
"It's definitely a concern and with the renter's insurance you want to make sure that you're insured," says Ochsner.
On Friday, firefighters canvassed the Silver Springs apartment complex.
