Recap: Kent State vs. Western Mich
Cleveland, OH (Sports Network) - Justin Greene registered a game-high 23 points and collected nine rebounds to lead the Kent State Golden Flashes to a 76-72 victory over the Western Michigan Broncos in the quarterfinals of the Mid-American Conference Tournament at Quicken Loans Arena.
Randal Holt and Chris Evans added 13 points apiece to help pace fourth-seeded Kent State (21-10), while Michael Porrini chipped in 10 points to go with six rebounds and eight assists.
Demetrius Ward scored 16 points and grabbed six boards to lead the way for eighth-seeded Western Michigan (14-20), while Flenard Whitfield finished with 14 points and eight rebounds. Nate Hutcheson checked in from off the bench to contribute 13 points to go with eight rebounds, while Mike Douglas netted 11 points and passed out eight assists. Matt Stainbrook logged 10 points as well for the Broncos in the losing effort before fouling out.
The Broncos shot at an impressive 57.1 percent clip during the opening stanza, but still found themselves trailing Kent State, 76-72, heading into the break.
The Golden Flashes opened the second half with an 11-2 run and pushed their lead to as much as 68-49 with eight minutes remaining. The Broncos chipped away though, and got to within 75-72 with nine seconds left on the clock. Greene hit a free throw on the next Kent State possession, however, putting the game out of reach.
Kent State advances to Friday's semifinal round and will face top-seeded Akron.Game Notes
